About this Initiative

ASHP Advantage is conducting an educational initiative on optimizing bone health in cancer patients. Developed by content matter experts, this initiative is designed to educate pharmacists on the role of bisphosphonates and new and emerging bone-targeted therapies in treating patients with bone metastases or cancer treatment-induced bone loss.

Current cancer treatments have improved survival of patients with early breast cancer and other solid tumors but have also increased the need for effective interventions to reduce the risk for skeletal-related events, including pathologic bone fractures, spinal cord compression, need for surgery or radiation therapy to bone, and hypercalcemia of malignancy, in these patients. Additionally, many cancer therapies cause bone loss, which increases the risk for fractures. Pharmacists are taking an active role in managing the treatment of these patients.

Activities feature both live and on-demand learning formats designed to educate pharmacists on the management of bone metastases and prevention of skeletal-related events. Featured formats include activities conducted at selected ASHP State Affiliate meetings, e-Newsletters, live case-based webinar, web-based on-demand program, and podcast.
